The Question Every Parent Asks
It usually comes within the first week after diagnosis — typed into Google at midnight, or asked by a relative who has already found a WhatsApp forward about a child in Pune who was "completely cured" with a special diet.
"Can autism be cured?"
I have been asked this question hundreds of times. It deserves a completely honest answer.
The Honest Answer
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition — a difference in how the brain is structured and processes information.
It is present from birth.
Based on current scientific understanding, it cannot be cured.
There is no medication, no diet, no supplement, no therapy, no procedure, and no intervention that removes autism from a person's neurology.
This is the scientific consensus reflected in the position statements of every major medical and psychological body in the world.
But — and this is the part that matters as much as the above — "no cure" is not the same as "no hope."

Treatments Being Marketed in India — An Honest Assessment
Homeopathy for Autism
Multiple systematic reviews confirm no effect beyond placebo.
The primary risk is developmental time lost during the early intervention window.
Special Diets — Gluten-Free, Casein-Free
Multiple well-designed randomised controlled trials have found no significant benefit in the absence of a confirmed gastrointestinal condition.
Restrictive diets in children with already limited food ranges carry real nutritional risks.
Stem Cell Therapy for Autism
Stem cell therapy for autism is experimental.
It is not approved by any major regulatory body, including India's CDSCO.
It carries real medical risks and has not been shown effective in well-designed clinical trials.
No credible international autism research body recommends it.
